The Governance & Principled Leadership (G&PL) Research Cluster is an interdisciplinary initiative designed to encourage and promote interdisciplinary research on governance and leadership themes. Over 20 faculty members from accounting, business law, finance, management, and marketing are part of the cluster. Activities of the cluster include hosting conferences and seminars, promoting and disseminating the faculty’s research, funding research projects, and engaging with practitioners and policy-makers to address the most pressing governance and leadership issues affecting business and society.

International Corporate Governance Society conference

In November 2022, the G&PL cluster hosted the 8th International Corporate Governance Society (ICGS) Conference, which was attended by governance scholars and practitioners around the world. The theme of the conference was "Corporate Governance in a Digital Era: Challenges and Opportunities." The conference agenda can be viewed here. 

Annual Corporate Governance Conference

The G&PL cluster co-organizes and co-hosts the Annual Corporate Governance Conference with Broadridge Financial Solutions. The conference brings together academics, institutional investors, boards, policy-makers, and governance professionals to discuss the key governance challenges facing corporations. In addition to discussing the hot topics of each proxy season, the conference has focused on measurement and reporting challenges for sustainable business, corporate purpose, ESG in the boardroom, diversity, inclusion and equity issues (the “S” in ESG), virtual shareholder meetings, board refreshment and diversity, human capital management, gender pay gap, and the business impact of climate change.

G&PL Workshop Series

The G&PL Cluster runs a GP&L Workshop Series, featuring research presentations by faculty from all over the world. Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence Program

The G&PL Cluster also runs a Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence Program. Our first Scholar-in-Residence was George Serafeim (Harvard Business School), a leading expert on business sustainability.  Our second Scholar-in-Residence will be April Klein (NYU), a leading expert on corporate governance

Other Initiatives

Every year, in collaboration with the Johnson A. Edosomwan Leadership Institute, the G&PL Cluster runs a research proposal competition and winners of the competition receive research funding.  Examples of topics funded by the cluster are the effect of cultural background on perceptions of leader incivility, political discourse at work, and corporate fake news on social media.

Members

Fabrizio Ferri

Co-Chair
Fabrizio Ferri joined Miami Herbert Business School's faculty in 2018 after earning a Ph.D. in Accounting at Stern School of Business (NYU) and working at Harvard Business School, New York University and Columbia Business School. Professor Ferri's research interests focus primarily on corporate governance issues, with particular emphasis on shareholder activism, board of directors, CEO turnover and executive compensation. His research has been presented at numerous international and national conferences and covered by the media, including The New York Times, Business Week, Forbes, Barron's, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Financial Times and CFO Magazine. He is currently an editor for the Contemporary Accounting Research and an associate editor for Management Science.

Wei Shi

Co-Chair
Dr. Wei Shi joined the faculty of Miami Herbert Business School in 2018. He teaches strategic management at the undergraduate level, corporate strategy at the graduate level, and corporate governance at the doctoral level. His research focuses on the intersection of corporate governance and corporate strategy.

Gennaro Bernile

Prof. Bernile obtained a PhD in Finance from the University of Rochester in the Summer of 2006. Prior to re-joining University of Miami in January 2017, he worked at Lee Kong Chian School of Business at Singapore Management University since 2013. Prior to that, Professor Bernile served on the faculty of the University of Miami and worked at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as a Visiting Scholar between 2008 and 2010, where he was engaged both in rule-making and enforcement activities. In addition, he has worked on ad hoc consulting assignments for Forensic Economics Inc. since 2005.

Khrystyna Bochkay

Khrystyna Bochkay teaches advanced managerial accounting in the undergraduate program and joined the faculty in 2014 after completing her PhD in Accounting at Rutgers University. Khrystyna holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Masters of Science in Statistics from Ivan Franko National University in L’viv, Ukraine.

Timothy R. Burch

Timothy Burch joined the faculty of Miami Herbert Business School in 1997 after earning his PhD in Finance at the University of Michigan. He teaches corporate finance and investments at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and has served on the board of a mutual fund family. Prior to graduate studies, Professor Burch worked as an actuarial analyst at a global pension consulting firm. His research interests include mergers and acquisitions, asset price bubbles, and mutual funds.

Indraneel Chakraborty

Indraneel Chakraborty obtained a Ph.D. in finance from the Wharton School. He joined University of Miami in 2015. His research is in financial intermediation with implications for corporate finance and household finance.

Vidhi Chhaochharia

Vidhi Chhaochharia is an associate professor of finance and Co-chair of the Sustainable Business Research Cluster at the University of Miami. Professor Chhaochharia’s research focuses on corporate governance. Research by Professor Chhaochharia has appeared in leading finance journals such as the Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Financial Economics, and Journal of Finance.

Cecily Cooper

Cecily Cooper is an Associate Professor of Management. Her research interests include trust, trust repair, humor, and leadership. This research has been published in many leading Management journals and has received three national conference awards. Cecily has a keen interest in creating close partnerships with organizations when conducting research and focuses on providing value to these organizations. In addition, she serves on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes.

Marie Dasborough

Marie Dasborough is an Associate Professor of Management. She is a member of the Academy of Management, the Society for Industrial & Organizational Psychology (Division 14 of the American Psychological Association), the Network of Leadership Scholars, the International Society for Research on Emotions, and is an invited member of the Emotional Intelligence Consortium. Her research aims to promote human sustainability in organizations, by focusing on employee emotional wellbeing. She has published in the top management journals, including Academy of Management Review, Journal of Business Ethics, The Leadership Quarterly, and Journal of Organizational Behavior.

Caglar Irmak

Caglar Irmak is a Professor of Marketing, and Marketing Department Chair at Miami Herbert Business School. He received his PhD in Marketing from Baruch College, City University of New York and had academic positions at the University of South Carolina and University of Georgia prior to joining the University of Miami. His research interests include consumer reactions to corporate social responsibility initiatives. More broadly, he investigates consumer decision-making and perception of products, especially those that are relevant to consumer health and well-being.

Daniele Macciocchi

Daniele Macciocchi joined the faculty of Miami Herbert Business School in 2020. His research interests focus on corporate governance and the role of information in shaping financial contracts. Macciocchi's research has been presented at numerous international and national conferences and has been published in the Review of Financial Studies and the Journal of Accounting and Economics. Media mentions to note include, among others,  The Financial Times, Reuters, United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment, London Business School Review, Chicago Booth Review, Harvard Law School Forum on Corporate Governance and Financial Regulation, The Columbia Law School Blue Sky Blog.

Daniele Macciocchi

Miguel Minutti-Meza

Miguel Minutti-Meza is an Associate Professor of Accounting. He has been at the University of Miami since 2011. His research interests span the generation, dissemination and monitoring of accounting information in the capital markets, with a focus on auditing. His two most recent research projects examine how audit committees are responding the increasing complexity of financial reporting standards and their interactions with the external auditor.Miguel is editor at Contemporary Accounting Research and a member of the editorial boards of Journal of Accounting Research. He has published in several top accounting journals.

Dhananjay Nanda

Dhananjay Nanda is a professor of accounting at the University of Miami Herbert Business School. He teaches Managerial Accounting, Strategic Control and Financial Reporting, and Leadership issues in Control. He taught managerial accounting, cost and control systems at the Duke University Fuqua School of Business from 2002-2008 and the University of Michigan Business School from 1997-2002.

Linda Neider

Linda L. Neider is a tenured Professor of Management with a secondary appointment as Professor in the Department of Health Management and Policy in the Miami Herbert Business School.  She currently serves as the Chairman of the Department of Management, Director of the MS Program in Leadership, and the First Vice-Chair of the University of Miami’s Faculty Senate, the latter of which she has been elected to by the faculty at the university for the past four years.

Terri Scandura

Terri A. Scandura is the Warren C. Johnson Chair in Management. Scandura's fields of interest include leadership, mentorship, and applied research methods. From 2007 to 2012, she served as dean of the graduate school of the University. She has been a visiting scholar in Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, China and the United Arab Emirates. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Society for Industrial & Organizational Psychology, and the Southern Management Association. She has published in top journals such as the Academy of Management Journal, the Journal of Applied Psychology, the Journal of Management, and the Journal of International Business Studies. Her research addresses human sustainability within organizations by examining organizational justice, gender equality, and benevolent leadership.

Chester Schriesheim

Chester A. Schriesheim, Ph.D. is Distinguished Professor of Management at the University of Miami and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (elected 1986). He is generally considered to be one of the world’s top leadership scholars and is the author or co-author of over 200 books and scientific articles (published in such outlets as Psychological Bulletin, Journal of Applied Psychology, Academy of Management Journal, Organizational Research Methods, and Harvard Business Review). Most recently, he is the winner of the 2017 Distinguished Career Award given by the Research Methods Division of the Academy of Management for his contributions to basic and applied psychological statistics and psychometrics in leadership research.

Kay Tatum

Kay W. Tatum is an Associate Professor of Accounting at the Miami Hebert Business School. Her primary teaching and research interests are auditing and corporate governance. She joined the School’s Department of Accounting in 1986 after earning her Ph.D. at Texas Tech University. She served as Chair of the Department of Accounting from 2004 – 2008 and currently serves as Vice-Chair for External Relations of the Department of Accounting. Her articles have appeared in the Journal of Accountancy, The CPA Journal, and the Review of Accounting Studies. She also is a co-author of the book Audit Committees: A Guide for Directors, Management, and Consultants, Sixth Edition.
Teresa Scandura, Miami Herbert Business School professor

Nan Yang

Nan Yang received her Ph.D. in decision, risk, and operations from Columbia University in 2007. She joined the University of Miami in 2016. She taught previously at Cornell University and Washington University in St. Louis. Her research interests include supply risks in supply chain management, integrated supply and demand management, competition in supply chain management, and healthcare operations.
